Hypertension is the most common medical problem that happens during pregnancy-complicating
4-5% and there arose the need for a FOGSI FOCUS on Hypertensive Disorders in
Pregnancy (HDP). HDP is of four types — Gestational Hypertension (increased BP >140/90 mmHg
after 20 weeks), Preeclampsia (mild to severe-severe being associated with proteinuria), Eclampsia
(associated with fits), and Chronic Hypertension (hypertensive before pregnancy). HDP can occur
in any pregnant woman, even without any risk factor. Placental pathology, which is the cause of
HDP, cannot be predicted and prevented. However, complications can be prevented, by
monitoring the BP carefully and watching for the symptoms of preeclampsia such as headache,
blurring of vision, upper epigastric pain, reduced urinary output, and fetal movements. The
needed investigations can be done on and off. Hypertension is to be monitored carefully
throughout pregnancy. The medical management is to be started at the earliest in appropriate
cases and termination has to be individualized, irrespective of the gestational age, in order to
prevent the complications, including maternal mortality. This FOGSI FOCUS is covering all aspects
of HDP, which s the need of the hour, will be beneficial for all students and consultants.
